Check whether your pictures are referenced by absolute URLs.

thank you, this confirms my suspicion that it is a "linking" issue. but it also raises a key question:

since this is not a web site - just html mail - where do i specify the
absolute url to my images.....Photoshop, Dreamweaver?

In any place, it doesn't matter. What matters is that each picture is referenced properly. Are your pictures online?

the sliced pic is on my hard drive (which is why i am stumped as to what url to use ) - it serves as a background-design. i have isolated some areas on the pic as image maps that do , in fact, reference my web site.

All this is explained here: HTML messages with online pictures and here HTML messages with embedded inline pictures (MHTML).

By the way, don't use maps, almost no e-mail reader support them.
