iCash v5 is finally ready! We have been very busy in order to release this new version in time. Actually, it has been possible thanks to all the feedback and support we have received from you. We hope you will find in v5 some of the stuff you asked for. Otherwise, don't worry we have a lot of material left to process in order to offer lot of free updates in the next few months. Needless to say that new iCash release comes with a lot of new features and enhancements. Some changes have forced us to redo important parts of the software. Several of those changes seem small to you but they can be the result of months of work to adapt the application and make sure everything work as expected. We strongly feel it has been worth our time.
With v4.0 we introduced Budgeting, Account navigation and support for bar and pie charts. In new V5.0 we have added one of the oldest feature request we have ever received, the possibility to get scheduled transactions displayed along with the real ones. In addition, it is now possible to merge accounts, categories and contacts. The most tricky development has been without doubts the possibility to edit several transactions at the same time. We have also enhanced the whole interface adding new functions almost everywhere and we have added two new reports. The full list is right below. Enjoy!
Scheduled transactions visibility
The Transaction panel now displays your scheduled transactions along with the real ones. Don't panic! You can easily tell them apart since they are shown in light grey with a distinctive icon. It is now easier than ever to find out how many transactions are due and how much money will be spent monthly. You just need to go to the transaction panel as usual and if you have scheduled transactions iCash will automatically display them as disabled entries (light grey) with a different icon. You can edit those transactions double-clicking on them and using the usual scheduled transaction editor. In addition you can postpone or convert a scheduled transaction into a real transaction directly from the transaction panel by highlighting it and right-clicking on your mouse. You will see two new menus, 'Add now' and 'Postpone'. The 'Add now' menu will add the transaction ahead of time with today's date and will reschedule it automatically. The 'Postpone' menu reschedule the transaction to next date without adding it for current period. Note that the 'Add now' option is also available from the scheduler manager window. Don't worry, if you don't need this feature you can deactivate it from the preferences panel, by unchecking the 'Show Scheduled Transaction' box.
Multiple transactions edition
It is finally possible to edit several transactions at once as you do when editing music tags on iTunes. This is an extremely handy feature. You can for example set or remove the transaction type from hundreds of transactions in seconds. Supported fields are the date, the transaction type, both the origin and target accounts, the payee, the amount, the comment and the project. You can use this feature with as many transactions as you want and change as many fields as you need. Needless to say it is to be used with an especial care as there is no undo function available. To use this feature just highlight several transactions an select the 'Transaction | Edit' menu or right-click your mouse button and select the 'Edit' menu. You will get a new window with all the available fields. As soon as a field is changed, its heading check box get checked. Only checked fields will be updated. If something is wrong the 'Change' button will disable itself automatically.
Account Merging
There are times when you create new accounts and later find out that you could have used the ones that was already available. Or perhaps in a few months you will feel like some accounts are duplicated or useless and it would be much better if you could put them all together. Well, you can now achieve that and merge two or more accounts with just a couple of mouse clicks. Just select the 'Account -> Merge' menu or highlight an account and right-click your mouse. You will get a new window. Just select the type and currency of the account to be merged, select those accounts from the list right below and select which account should be kept. Once done click on the 'Merge' button. As a result all the selected accounts transactions have been moved to the account you have kept and they have been eventually removed. You have now the same as before but in one single account. This function is to be used with an especial care as there is no undo function available.
File Manager
We no longer have that weird window called 'Recent Documents' displaying a few of your files. It is now called 'File Manager'. It lists absolutely all the files you have been working on and now allows you to Delete and Duplicate any of your documents. The 'Delete' button allows you to either move a document to the trash or just remove it from the list keeping it on your hard disk. The 'Duplicate' button allows you to create a carbon copy of a file and get it added to the list. It can be handy if you need to work on a copy or to create an accessible back-up. In addition we have added a new button called 'Tools' that gives a quick access to all the maintenance procedures, 'Diagnose', 'Rebuild Index', 'Optimize' and 'Recover Database'. The 'Optimize' procedure is being introduced in this new version. It allows you to optimize your document by compacting and defragmenting its records. Finally the new 'Restore' button let's you restore an iCash document from both a manual or an automatic XML back-up.
Revisited Accounts, Categories, contacts, Currencies and Scheduler windows
Several of the most used windows have been redesigned by including a new toolbar with new handy functionalities. The Accounts, Categories, Contacts, Currencies and Scheduler windows now allows you to duplicate, merge, import, export and print entries in addition to the standard 'Add', 'Edit' and 'Delete' functions. It is now easier than ever to edit your data!
Payment Summary Report
It has been a long time since we last added a new report to iCash. The Payment Summary Report is really handy actually since it displays the full list of your payees showing how much money you got and how much money you spent on each of them. It also includes the Profit and Loss and an overall ratio. By default the full list is displayed but you can use the pull-down menu next to the report selector to chose a particular payee category or just one single payee. If you choose one single Payee you will get a useful Payee Statement similar to the Account Statement Report where you can see all the transactions for that Payee for the selected date range along with the updated balance.
General Ledger Report
iCash General Ledger Report is a detailed Profit and Loss report showing a summary of all your transactions organized by Type, Category and Account. Usually, this is a report used in double-entry bookkeeping but we have tried to create our own version here. The General Ledger Report is similar to the detailed Profit and Loss report but it adds the transactions related to each account. This report is actually a new choice when you select the Profit and Loss Statement report from the report selector in addition to the Summarized and Detailed ones.
Project Manager
Finally a Project Manager has been added to iCash. Projects are tags you can assign to transactions to later create custom reports. Actually to create a new project you just need to edit any transaction and write whatever on the Project field as you do with comments. Later on you may find a project name is meaningless or perhaps you no longer need a given project at all. No problem, you can now use the Project Manager to delete and rename projects. Affected transactions will be automatically processed as you make changes on the Project Manager.
